Andante, 24 x 48 inches, oil on linen
For the past several years, I've participated in Crocker Art Museum's annual auction. This painting is my entry this year. I've always done pretty well at this event, and I'm curious to know how the economy will affect this year's auction. The preview party last week was crowded but I'm not sure it's because of the smaller venue or there were actually more people.
The silent auction wasn't getting much action, but I think the bids are open till the big gala so there's a lot of time yet.
The museum is going through a major expansion project and its grand re-opening is set for October of this year. I'm pretty excited about this. The Crocker has a very good collection, and with the new, big, beautiful space it is sure to bring in some top notch shows to Sacramento. It's about time, too. I think Sacramento has a lot of potential in the visual art field but it's still provincial and it needs a serious, active epicenter to put us on the map. I think the new Crocker will be a giant leap in that direction. I hope so. With all the political theatre going on both at the state and the city level, nothing ever gets done in Sacramento. It's a miracle that the Crocker was able get this project flying!
Anyway, whether the public is ready for a serious art scene remains to be seen, but I do hope we are making progress. Now if only the economy picks up...

Wowee, is there a perspective lesson in the cadence of the lampost grouping at left...loookee, lookee!
Very nice piece. Reminds me a bit of Richard Bunkall. I love how the eye is lead around this painting though, and how the shadows are used to further this effect.
Nice painting Terry I like it a lot.
thanks David~ Nothing special about the lampposts. I just made sure that the spaces between them diminished as they moved back. It's neither accurate or precise, but it helps a lot with the sense of depth :-)
Thanks Shane~ It's not surprising that it reminds you of Richard's paintings, as he taught me how to paint and was a huge influence on me early on. I'm after something different and I hope that's as apparent as the influences~
Thanks for visiting my blog :-) your work is amazing!
Thanks Jesus~ tell Kate she did a great job with the red scooter!
I missed the auction this year. They had my new address on the auction day viewing invitation but my OLD address on the artist participation invitation, so I missed it! They missed a lot of other "old hands" this yr. as well. I called to rectify my mailing address issue so hopefully next year I'll see you there.
On another more pleasant subject...that diner and truck you painted is a killer, and I'm still groovin (go to Wikepedia for a definition) on your road paintings.
Oh wow, that's awesome Terry. I only had him for one term (Head Painting), and I always look back and wished I had tried harder in his class. He passed shortly after I graduated ('98).
Thank you for the compliments on my work. I'm working on transitioning back into traditional media, and your work is a constant inspiration during this process. Thank you for the regular posts and insights into your paintings!
Your amazing oils!!!
This is a gorgeous and most beautiful painting, Terry. It has such a European historical feel to it. What does Adante mean? I also hope this economy does a turn around soon. We're in a fairly desperate state here in IL too...
DaLo, there were some good work there. where and how they hung the pieces were less than optimal, but I hope that'll change once the new section opens. You'll be there for that!
Shane, I like your oils too~ coming from an illustration background, you have compositional ideas which are different from the prevalent formulaic landscapes. A nice kick in the pants :-)
Thanks J R! Your comment is much appreciated :-)
Autumn, thanks! "Andante" means "walking". It's a musical term describing walking speed tempo.
It's also the title of a cityscape show I did years ago, in which I had a lot of walking figures.
the economy's gotta pick up soon. I'm tired of drinking Two Buck Chuck.
