Crocker Museum Permanent Collection

Metropolis, 32 x 48 inches, oil on canvas, 2002

I was just informed that one of my paintings, Metropolis, is now officially a part of the permanent collection at the Crocker Art Museum!! I am really excited, to say the least!

I did this painting back in 2002 for an exhibition of the same title. I remember struggling with it quite a bit. I loved it, I hated it. I loved it, I hated it. One of those pieces. In the end I loved it and didn't want to sell it but it was for an exhibition and the image was already on the invites so I had to let it go.

Now it has somehow found a new home at the Crocker! I don't know if it's actually displayed, but never mind. I'm just happy to be in the collection.

I gotta open a good bottle of wine to celebrate now. It's not even 4 pm. but who cares!?

  8. Terry, Seeing the progress in your career is inspiring to me. Do you know what the provenance on that piece was? Just curious how paintings end up in museum collections...aside from the obvious, that it's a beautiful piece reflecting our times. Wondering also, which wine you picked to go with that celebration.

  9. Way to go Terry! Cheers!
I think much of your work should be displayed to the public. There is a human quality in your work that is honest and good.
I will toast to your success later today!

  11. Thank you so much for your generous pats on my back! I really, really appreciate it!!

Candace, I think the painting was donated to the museum by the collector who bought it from the gallery in the first place. I have no information as to the terms of the donation. The collector, I'm guessing, is a patron and a supporter of the Crocker, as well as a private collector.

I think these things (paintings going into museum collections) can happen in various different ways. One common way is when there's a juried competition hosted/sponsored by a museum, and they make a "purchase award".

I have another painting in a museum, and the way that took place is like this; I did an illustration for Utne Reader a long time ago, and the rights to reprint the article along with the illustration was bought by American Heritage, which was noticed by the people putting together the displays at the Smithsonian, because the article was relevant to what they were doing. The museum decided to use my illustration in the display, and asked if I would donate the original to the museum. I get to put the Smithsonian on my bio, and the museum gets to use my work for free. I thought it was a pretty good trade.

And the wine? 2005 Fiddlehead. MMMMmmm~

  12. I must add my congratulations! It's a lovely piece. I hope they put it on display for everyone to see. Does the Crocker ever do juried competitions?

  17. Another round of thanks!!

GayLynn, I don't know of any juried shows hosted by Crocker Museum, Except the Crocker Kingsley Biennial which usually happens without much publicity at all, so I always miss it. I'm not sure if they're doing it this year.
